LOWER LAKE GRAMMAR SCHOOL

The first grammar school was built in 1864, but was soon too small. In 1876 construction of a new school began. It was originally built for grades 1 through 9 by Ralph K. Nichols. The first teacher was Albert Morrell. The building was two stories high and built of brick. Just before it was completed, a drunken man got into it some way, and in attempting to light a pipe, set the shavings on fire. Everything was destroyed except for the brick walls. It was built again and served as the schoolhouse until 1935. The bell tower on the old schoolhouse was removed following the 1906 earthquake, probably due to some damage. This building is now the Lower Lake Schoolhouse Museum.

The new Lower Lake Grammar School was built on a hill outside Lower Lake in 1934 by W.P.A. workers.
